About Department of Environmental Quality

The Gila River Indian Community established the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) by Executive Order on August 1, 1995. The new department brought together existing programs, including environmental education and outreach, pesticides, solid waste and water quality. The department has grown to include air quality, hazardous waste, brownfields, underground storage tanks, environmental planning and policy analysis, Community outrach and education.

The primary focus of the Department of Environmental Quality is to protect human health and the environment. The department currently employs 25 environmental professionals that are responsible for the enforcement of tribal environmental laws and ordinances. The department has also established a close working relationship with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) to ensure that facilities operating within the Community's boundaries are in compliance with federal environmental laws.

The department's strategic goal is to mentor the next generation of environmental managers within the Community. To achieve this goal, the department created an active intern program that started soon after the department was established. The department has included 15 interns, one of which is active in the program and four that have taken other positions within the department.
